Combining traditional craft with modern curiosity.
McDougall Makes is a creative studio based in the Kingdom of Fife, Scotland, dedicated to the intersection of physical making and digital exploration.
The Person
I’m James McDougall, a tech enthusiast driven by curiosity and the challenge of solving problems. My career has been rooted in the digital world—most recently as a Data Analyst for a Learning and Development team—where I spent my time finding the story within the numbers.
Now, I’m turning that analytical mindset toward the physical world. McDougall Makes is my way of bringing those two halves together. I take the precision of data and AI-assisted design and "translate" it into tangible, high-quality products at the workshop bench.
My "Wizard" persona is really just a nod to that process: the bit of magic that happens when you use modern technology to bridge the gap between a digital concept and a real, physical object you can hold in your hand.
The Process
I chose the name "McDougall Makes" because it covers the full scope of what I do without being boxed into one specific craft. It’s about the general act of production—taking a digital design and finding the best way to bring it into the physical world.
The Gallery serves as a living catalog of my visual work. Any design you see there can be ordered as a high-fidelity print, but it also serves as a starting point for more custom applications. Using precision tools like 3D printing and specialized UV Resin ink printing, I can translate these designs onto a variety of physical mediums.
Based in my workshop in Fife, I’m constantly experimenting with new materials and techniques, including an upcoming move into small-scale leatherworking for handcrafted keepsakes. For me, the goal isn't to let technology do all the work, but to use it as a high-tech extension of the maker's hand to create something unique.
